Alessio Lisci: “The team is very happy with what we’ve done. We rallied back and advanced to the next round”

The Rojillo boss addressed the media following today's 4-2 win over Huesca

Osasuna head coach Alessio Lisci spoke to the media after his side’s victory in Huesca, which secured qualification for the next round of the Copa del Rey.

“The team is very happy with what we’ve done,” Lisci said. “I think we deserved to avoid extra time, but it had to be played and that’s football. We rallied back and we’ve advanced. The last time Osasuna reached the final, there were four extra-time matches along the way. That doesn’t mean that team was bad or didn’t deserve to reach the final. You have to do what the competition demands.”

The Italian coach stressed his enthusiasm for the Copa del Rey. “I’ve been excited about this competition since the first round. Every round is difficult for me,” he said. “Obviously, the further you go, the happier you are, but the key was to progress without affecting our LaLiga form, and I think we’ve managed that so far. Now we have to carry this momentum into the weekend’s match.”

Lisci was also asked about the feeling left by a game decided in extra time. “The takeaway for me is that Mallorca are out, Levante are out, Celta are out, Villarreal are out,” he said. “The Copa looks very easy until you step onto the pitch. We’d said that already. I don’t think we deserved to go to extra time — I believe we deserved to win in 90 minutes — but it didn’t happen. So you play extra time, you go through and that’s the end of the story.”

He also praised Osasuna’s supporters. “I want to thank the fans, who supported us as they always do. They were incredible,” Lisci said. “Like on the day at Ebro, it’s something that has to be valued. This is a competition that people say is ‘very easy,’ but once you’re on the pitch, it really isn’t.”
